The prosecution of Alex Murdaugh ended on Thursday with a verdict that Murdaugh killed his wife and son, a case that sparked intense interest not just in the US but also in other nations.

Three hours of deliberation on Thursday brought the six-week long prosecution of the scion of a wealthy South Carolina family to a close. Murdaugh is charged with multiple murders, each carrying a sentence ranging from 30 years to life in jail without the possibility of parole.

At 9:30 on Friday, the judges will reassemble to discuss sentencing. Near a dog kennel on one of the family’s properties, Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were shot.

Why Did Murdaugh Kill His Wife And Son

Alex allegedly murdered them to draw attention away from the numerous financial crimes he had committed over the past few years, according to the prosecution. On the morning of June 7, 2021, the chief financial officer of his law firm stated that he confronted Alex Murdaugh about missing money.

The financial probe was pushed to the side later that day after the murders took place. His money wrongdoings might have been revealed in the Mallory Beach lawsuit, which was set to begin on June 10, 2021. After his son Paul was involved in a boating mishap in 2019, Mallory Beach passed away.

On the Beaufort River in South Carolina on February 23, 2019, Paul Murdaugh operated a skiff with five other people on board. He was on the yacht with Mallory Beach, Anthony Cook, Morgan Doughty, Miley Altman, and Connor Cook.

How Did Alex Murdaugh Kill His Family?

According to Alex Murdaugh, he wasn’t present at the crime site and had nothing to do with the killings. On June 7, 2021, at the Colleton County shooting lodge, Paul was shot twice with a shotgun while Alex’s wife Maggie was shot multiple times with a Blackout rifle.

Near Maggie’s body, blackout rifle bullet casings were discovered that matched those on other sections of the property. The gun vanished. Lt. Britt Dove of the State Law Enforcement Division, an expert in locating and analysing cellphone data, reviewed call records, videos, steps taken, GPS locations, etc.

Although Alex Murdaugh maintained that he hadn’t killed his wife and son, a mobile phone video taken by his son sealed the case against him. The primary piece of evidence in the murder trial that positioned Alex Murdaugh at the site of the crime was Paul’s cellphone video of the dogs at the kennel.

According to the prosecution, the footage was taken about five minutes prior to the killings. According to two of Paul’s friends who testified, Paul, Maggie, and Alex’s voices could definitely be heard on the recording. Alex Murdaugh, however, has insisted that he was not present at the grounds when the killings took place.

In Hampton, South Carolina, they established a civil litigation law company that specialised in cases involving personal injuries. After earning his legal degree from the University of South Carolina (USC) in 1910, Randolph Murdaugh Sr. established a solo practise in Hampton.

In 1920, he was admitted as a solicitor in the 14th judicial district. He was replaced by Randolph “Buster” Murdaugh Jr., who served from 1940 to 1986.
