Kathleen Johnson was born on May 11, 1941, in San Francisco, California, to parents J. Cyril and LaPrele Lindsay Johnson. She was the second of four children and grew up in a loving and supportive family. In her school years, Kathleen excelled in both academics and sports, becoming the captain of the tennis team, student body president, and valedictorian.
After high school, she went on to study English with a minor in history at the University of California, Berkeley. She was an active member of the Latter-day Saint student association, which strengthened her faith in Jesus Christ and her spiritual journey.
In the summer of 1961, while attending Harvard University for summer school, Kathleen’s life changed. She met Henry Bennion Eyring, a student from Harvard, during a devotional gathering. They fell in love and got married on July 19, 1962, in the Logan Utah Temple. They settled in Palo Alto, California, where Henry worked at Stanford University.
Over the years, they had six children: Henry, Stuart, Matthew, John, Elizabeth, and Mary. In 1977, they moved to Utah, and Henry worked in Church Education for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kathleen’s main focus was supporting her husband and being a mother, a role she cherished.
