Joe Mazzulla is an American professional basketball coach who currently holds the position of head coach for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to taken up the job as a coach, Mazzulla played both high school and college basketball for the Bishop Hendricken High School and West Virginia University respectively. Unfortunately, he was undrafted in the 2011 NBA draft to which he eventually joined the Glenville State as an assistant coach.

Joseph Mazzulla is the first of three children birthed to Daniel Mazzulla and Latresa Mazzulla. He was born on June 30, 1988 in Johnstone, Rhode Island, United States. His siblings are Justin and Gianna Mazzulla.
Mazzulla attended Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island, where he played basketball and began to make a name for himself when he made the All-State First Team. During his time, he lifted three state titles, with his third as a senior on a last-second shot.
Upon graduating from high school, Mazzulla enrolled at the West Virginia University. He continued with his basketball exploits, helping the team win the 2007 National Invitation Tournament under coach John Bellein.
In the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Mazzulla began is a pretty good fashion, posting 13 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in a second-round upset of Duke before suffering a shoulder injury which forced him to redshirt the 2008-09 season.
After undergoing a surgery, which he even thought he couldn’t play professional basketball, he still trained for two hours day with the hope to gain match fitness. He returned as a redshirt junior in the 2010 season, leading the team to the Final Four as a captain.
Over the course of Mazzulla’s collegiate career, he recorded 700 points and 340 assists. As a senior, he managed an average 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Mazzulla was drafted in the 2011 NBA draft and he opted instead to take a coaching job at Nova Southeastern, but he turned his sight to professional opportunities rather. Not finding any suitable ones, he joined Glenville State as an assistant in 2011.
In 2013, Mazzulla joined Fairmont State as an assistant coach under Jerrod Calhoun. After three season there, he then went to serve as an assistant for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA G League.
Mazzulla was named head coach of Fairmont State in March 2017. In his second season, he led the team to a 22–9 record and appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament, where they lost in the first round to Mercyhurst, 63–60, in overtime.
Since 2019, Mazzulla has been with the Boston Celtics, first hired as an assistant coach, then an interim head coach and officially the head coach of the NBA team. In April 2023, Mazzulla was named one of three finalists for NBA head coach of the year. The Celtics entered the playoffs with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.
