Alvin Bragg Jr. is an American politician and lawyer from New York State who is serving as the New York County District Attorney.

Alvin Bragg biography and career

Bragg was raised on Striver’s Row and is a native of Harlem. Bragg stated that he had been “deeply affected by the criminal justice system, most directly through three gunpoint stops by the NYPD,” in an interview with The American Prospect.

He completed his education at Trinity School before enrolling in Harvard College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in administration from Harvard Cum laude in 1995 and graduated from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, where he also obtained his Juris Doctor.

Prior to becoming an associate at the law firm Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello, Bragg worked as a law clerk for federal district judge Robert P. Patterson Jr. His work there concentrated on white collar crime and civil rights issues. Before becoming the director of lawsuits and investigations for the New York City Council, he began working for Eliot Spitzer’s office of the New York Attorney General in 2003. Bragg resigned from the city council in 2009 to take a position as an associate US attorney in the Southern District of New York.
