He made his first film appearance as Count Konradin von Lohenburg in the 1989 drama film Reunion.

Samuel West was cast as Leonard Bast in the 1992 period romantic drama film Howards End and this role got him nominated for a BAFTA Award for “Best Supporting Actor”.

In 2005, he succeeded Michael Grandage as artistic director of Sheffield Theatres.

He portrayed King George VI in the 2012 historical comedy-drama film Hyde Park on Hudson, starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney.
