Michaela Ewuraba Boakye-Collinson was born in East London. Her mother raised her and her sister in East London, primarily in the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

In 2006, Coel began giving poetry open mic readings in Ealing. Ché Walker, an actor, playwright, and director, encouraged her to apply to Guildhall after seeing her perform at the Hackney Empire.
Coel performed as a poet at Wembley Arena, Bush Theatre, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and De Doelen in Rotterdam. Her stage name was Michaela The Poet.
In 2009, Coel enrolled in the Talawa Theatre Company’s TYPT summer school program. While still a Talawa student, Coel appeared in the TYPT 2009 production of Krunch.
