Gymnastics’ upcoming generation will confront tougher competition when Olympians return.

Jocelyn Roberson gave a speech at school about Simone Biles while she was in the second grade. While Biles wasn’t yet an Olympian, she was already establishing her mark as one of the most dominant and decorated gymnasts of all time. This was in April 2015, four years before Roberson started her elite gymnastics career.

At the U.S. Classic earlier this month, Roberson, now 17 years old, and Biles, 26, shared the podium after Roberson placed third and Biles won the all-around competition. Roberson, like many gymnasts of her generation, was inspired by Biles as a young girl. She had no idea that they would eventually train and compete together or that she would face competition from several members of the Tokyo U.S. Olympic squad for a position on the team in Paris the following year.

It’s really bizarre, said Roberson. “During the previous quad, I was envious of them and yearned to be like them, but now that I’m competing against them, I get to greet them and make friends with them. It’s a very strange sensation, and everything has come full circle.

Gymnastics was once thought of as a sport for teenagers, and the majority of gymnasts focused on finishing just one Olympic cycle in order to have a chance to compete at the Games. Roberson turned 16 last year, making him a senior elite gymnast, the category from which the Olympic and world championship teams are chosen. Her main emphasis had been the Paris Games the following year.

However, Biles is one of two Olympic all-around champions competing at this weekend’s U.S. championships. The current all-around gold winner Sunisa Lee has joined Biles in making a comeback to elite competition, and after competing in Tokyo, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey also have their sights set on Paris. Four Olympians, eight athletes from global championships, and 58 medals in all make up the competition at the U.S. championships.

Li Li Leung, CEO of USA Gymnastics, commented, “The depth of talent is absolutely incredible and unlike we have ever seen.”

Shilese Jones, who narrowly missed making the Tokyo team and won silver in the all-around, gold in the team competition, and silver on bars at last year’s world championships, is also among the returning gymnasts. Leanne Wong and Kayla DiCello, who were alternates for the Tokyo Games, are also included in the group. The five slots on the team for the world championships in autumn and the five positions on the 2024 Olympic team are up for grabs between that group and the young gymnasts of Roberson’s generation.

Coming one position short of making that (Tokyo) team was really difficult, according to Jones. It will undoubtedly be challenging because there are so many talented people in this area.

Skye Blakely, 18, who was also a member of the team that won the world championships the previous year, added, “There’s definitely a lot more to choose from now compared to other years.” “A lot more older girls are returning, and more knowledgeable individuals who have attended not one, but two Olympics are returning, so it’s absolutely wonderful. Watching it is enjoyable.

Roberson and Blakely were quick to express how happy they were for the older gymnasts who were still competing at the highest level. Both gymnasts intend to participate in college, which is no longer a career-ending decision for elite athletes. Observing other gymnasts compete in both elite and NCAA competitions has helped them realize that they may have more than one opportunity to make an Olympic team.

However, it cannot be disputed that 2024 was always the goal.

Since I was a young child, 2024 has been my only Olympic goal, according to Roberson. But now that I’ve seen all these older girls coming back for more, I feel like I might actually want to do more. Perhaps I should attempt a second one. But I’ve always had one, and I’ve always been honest with my parents about it: “No, I don’t want to come back.” I don’t intend to return. I don’t want to return if I don’t make it to 2024.

Roberson, Blakely, and the rest of their cohort are aware of the fierceness of the competition as the road to Paris heats up from this weekend through the world championships in Antwerp, Belgium, this autumn, and on through the Olympic trials in June.

Roberson remarked, “I feel like the depth is so crazy this quad.” “I think it’s the depth we’ve had in a while,” the speaker said. I’m eager to go along for the ride, but it will be great to see how the coming year plays out.
