Colby Covington is an American professional mixed martial artist who began competing in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in 2014. Colby, as a wrestler, at Thurston High School, had lettered all 4 years and had won the state championship in his senior year, in the 171 lbs category.

While he was studying at the Iowa Central Community College, he had won the 165 lbs national junior college wrestling title, as a true freshman, with an impeccable 34–0 win-loss record. At that time, his roommate was future UFC champion, Jon Jones.

In August 2007, he had been arrested on charges of evading the police and driving under the influence. After he was nabbed, his blood alcohol limit was found to be 3 times the legal limit. Due to his arrest, he had been suspended from the Iowa Hawkeyes program for a year and only saw limited competitive time the following season.

While he was studying at Oregon State University, he had qualified for the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament as a junior and as a senior, finishing in 5th place as a senior and earning ‘All-American’ honors. He was also a 2-time ‘Pac-10 Conference’ champion in the 174 lbs category.

In May 2010, he was charged with fourth-degree assault in an incident in which he had allegedly punched a couple of men after a verbal altercation. The local authorities had later dropped the charges against him.
